Social media can be a great tool to use when seeking to boost the popularity of a business. There are rules, though, that need to be adhered to when trying to get the most out of the social media experience.

Remain Active

Any business with a social media presence needs to remain active. Some businesses will make the mistake of opening several accounts on the same social media site, but then some of those pages will become inactive, which will consequently reflect badly on the business itself. Any business should decide how many hours it wants to spend on using social media sites per week, and that allocated time should always be achievable.

Be Interesting

When using social media it’s important for a business, or people representing that business, to be interesting, as well as to be interested in the comments from people who follow them. Posts which are just descriptions of products or a service are not going to grab the attention of people. Social media users want to see that they’re dealing with real people.

Value Feedback

A good way of promoting a business through social media is to invite feedback on specific products and services. People like to be asked their opinions on things as it makes them feel as if their opinions are valued. The feedback can then be used to determine which products or services are popular, or are likely to be so.

Engage

When receiving feedback it’s also important to respond to as many of the comments as possible. Engaging with customers always goes down well, whereas ignoring them will alienate them. It’s been proved that the more a business engages with prospective customers, then the more the prospective customers are likely to buy products. Those followers who feel engaged will also be more likely to pass on your information to their friends.

Be Selective

Businesses should be selective about who they follow, and cultivate their audience. Followers can easily be built up, but it’s the quality of those followers that is going to make the difference to a business.

Never Be Complacent

Using social media effectively in attracting interest is one thing, but all businesses need to back up that interest by delivering a good product or service. Social media can help to build a business through making a positive impact, but that positive impression can just as quickly become a negative one.

When used correctly, social media can be a hugely beneficial tool for your business. When used in the wrong way, however, social media can be both a waste of time, and even damaging, when trying to build customer relationships. Lets have a look at the 3 worst ways to use social media in your business.

1. Being Insensitive

People are easily offended, and you’ll have to walk a fine line if you’re intending on being controversial. Controversial topics get a great deal of attention, and can provide excellent opportunities for you to get in front of your audience. However, you need to always be tactful, respectful, and sensitive to how people feel. If you start trying to get your message across to people in an insensitve way you can do great damange to your brand.

2. Over-promising

You need to live up to your end of the deal and over-deliver if you want to use social media successfully. Offer things for free and people will begin to trust you. Provide great content and you will begin to build relationships. Promise that you will deliver something, and then fail to do so, however, and you will alienate a large percentage of your viewership. You simply must deliver on any promise you make, and should, in fact, give more value than people are expecting. If you give amazing value for free, imagine what value you’ll give for a paid product or service. This is the mindset you want your viewers to have.

3. Not being social

This is probably the largest possible mistake that you can make on social media. It is called ‘social’ media for a reason, so therein lies the big clue. You must constantly engage with your viewers, and be social at all times. Being absent for any length of time witout explanation will cause some viewers or followers to lose interest. If you suddenly stop being socially active, what do you think will happen? Your viewers will go elsewhere for what they are looking for. Don’t let this happen.

Singularly, these 3 mistakes can be damaging to your business. Combined, however, they can be disastrous, so be sure to avoid each of them to maintain your social media presence and integrity.

Promoting a business through social media is a fairly recent phenomenon, but one that is now necessary for all businesses.

Firstly, you’ll need to build up a strong social media presence. This should be done manually, rather than by using tools that build up followers in an automatic way. Social media isn’t just about weight of numbers either. Building up a hundred followers who are generally interested in what you have to offer is preferable to having a thousand who aren’t.

Secondly, look at your audience, and see what they’re talking about, and what they are enthusiastic about. This will help you to determine what you should promote, but you may also be surprised by the results. Some things may prove to be more popular than you expected, while what you expected to be unpopular is well received. It’s best to keep an open mind, and not just necessarily give what you think is the best product the hard sell.

Thirdly, you’ll need to test which promotions prove to be popular. This should be gauged by a number of things, including likes, shares, and, obviously, actual sales. Particularly important is to identify which items have proved popular with which people, and you should also track who has shared your posts outside of your own immediate network.

Encourage feedback, and take note of criticism as well as praise. The feedback will then make it easier for you to fine tune your future promotions through social media. An example of how you can react positively to comments is, for instance, if your product has been given the thumbs up, but your postage and packing costs have received a negative reaction. You then have to decide on lowering those costs, raising the cost of the product, changing nothing and/or offer a free gift in your next promotion.

If you know what people want, then creating a social promotion is fairly easy. You shouldn’t run too many promotions at the same time, but spread them out wisely. There can be a certain amount of trial and error when using social media, but there are no advertising costs to worry about, and the value of using social media is often down to how much time and effort that you put in.
